Reporting in from Lee Heights Arlington

Power is on in our neighborhood.  Mostly there are a lot of small branches littering the roads. On some roads the small branches create a thick carpet. As you approach Marymount University (near 26th St) you can hear generators.  Marymount University has a generator on.  The water tower had a generator on; but it may be off by now.  There were three bucket-trucks predeployed at the mulch pile; they were still parked there - I assume they have to wait for the winds to die down a bit more.  Over on 24th St near Wakefield Ct there is a house that has been crushed by a large tree.  Looks like the tree was in the backyard; the whole tree fell over onto the roof doing significant damage.  Neighbors were out talking with the home owner. Up at the Lee-Heights shopping mall, Starbucks is open and doing a stiff business. Arlington folk on Facebook are reporting that power is being restored. Lots of people are out walking and jogging.

Lost Dog 5K - Pictures from the Second Race

Lost Dog Rescue is celebrating 10 years of rescuing dogs and cats by having a series of 5K Fund-Raiser races in Bluemont Park in cooperation with Pacers. Last Friday I was accidentally in Bluemont when I was overwhelmed by 100s of puppies happy playing along with whatever this 5K Race thing is.  This Friday, I got pictures.  Well not really....  Didnt have the camera on the right setting... but it gives a cool effect of the dogs ZOOMING by!

Lead dog goes zooming by in a blur of golden fur!

Puppies of all sizes are out enjoying the evening.

Adopt Your Next Best Friend

Arlington has a number of excellent animal rescue organizations.  Lost Dog and Stray Cat Rescue is one of them.  About 10 years old and with its roots in the popular Westover pizza joint, Lost Dog has rescued and adopted... I think the flier said 14,000 dogs over the last ten years.  They frequently adopt out 40 dogs in a weekend.  Lost Dog gets dogs from a lot of desperate situations such as the West Virginia Railroad Crew.

This past weekend I volunteered at a Lost Dog adoption event and had the pleasure of handling Bentley:

Breed: Labrador Retriever Mix
Sex: Male
Age: Approx. 20 month(s)
Color: Yellow
Size: Approx. 76 lbs
Good with Kids?: Yes
Good with Cats?: Not Yet Determined
Good with Dogs?: Yes
Bentley is a big boy who enjoys running around the yard and playing with other dogs.  He had a rough start in life, but he loves being around people and is getting used to his new life in the Lost Dog family.  He’s ready for the next chapter in his life to begin, and with a little training and a lot of love, this guy promises to be the best dog he can possibly be!

You can go to the Lost Dog website and see the dogs currently up for adoption. It is a joyous thing to give a dog a new home.
